Riccardo Calafiori, defender for Arsenal and Italy, recounted the dramatic day his «best friend» Edoardo Bove experienced a cardiac arrest during a Serie A game for Fiorentina. Calafiori expressed his support for Bove’s continued pursuit of his football dream, questioning why he shouldn’t if he’s able.

The incident occurred just over a year ago, in early December 2024, during a Serie A fixture between Fiorentina and Inter. The match was halted in the first half when Bove, then on loan from Roma, collapsed on the field.

Subsequent reports confirmed that Bove’s heart had stopped for a short period. He was promptly hospitalized, spending time in intensive care before being discharged after 12 days.

Subsequently, Bove was fitted with a removable defibrillator. While Italian football regulations prohibit players from competing with such a device, this rule differs in many other nations globally, notably in England.

Following a year-long absence from the sport, Bove recently signed with EFL Championship club Watford. In England, he is legally permitted to play, and has now made his first competitive appearance since the distressing incident at the Stadio Franchi in December 2024.

Calafiori, one of Bove’s closest friends, trains at Arsenal’s facility, which is conveniently located adjacent to Watford’s training ground.

During a recent appearance on the Supernova podcast, Calafiori spoke about his early career, his transfer to the Premier League, and his experiences living in London.

He also shared his personal experience witnessing the distressing incident involving Bove.

Calafiori stated, «Edo is one of my closest friends in football. We met at Roma; I joined when I was nine, and he joined at ten. We’re actually the same age, with him being just three days older than me.»

He recounted, «I wasn’t watching the match, but I clearly remember my mother calling me, crying. When I switched on the TV, I saw the game had been halted. My mum kept saying, ‘I think it’s Edo, I think it’s Edo.’ She wasn’t thinking straight at that moment. It was truly awful.»

«I can only imagine how much more difficult it must have been for his mother, Tanya, and the rest of his family,» he added.

Currently, Bove has resumed his professional football career in England’s second division, playing for Watford.

Calafiori noted, «I must say, I’ve seen a significant improvement in him. From an outsider’s perspective, for the initial ten days, you’re simply grateful to be alive. However, I also recognize that for him, this incident occurred when he was truly thriving at Fiorentina, starting to establish himself as a genuine player, and experiencing his first time away from Roma.»

He concluded, «Ultimately, football is our life. If you have the ability to play, why wouldn’t you? I’ve observed him looking well, though naturally, he undergoes numerous tests and such. His entire life has undeniably changed, but if he can continue pursuing his dream, then why not? He has the opportunity to play here.»
